Choosing the Right Awning for a West-Facing Deck

Awnings and Blinds Sydney · August 2026

A west-facing deck is brilliant — until about 3pm in summer, when the low afternoon sun turns it into a furnace. The good news: the right awning (or combination) makes it usable from lunch right through to sunset.

The challenge with west-facing sun

Overhead shade is easy. West sun is hard, because it comes in low and sideways in the afternoon — sliding straight under a fixed roof or a standard awning. So the best solution usually shades both above and to the side.

Your main options

Folding arm awning

The go-to for decks. It extends out over the space to give you a big block of overhead shade, and retracts away when you don’t need it so you keep your open sky and views.

Great flexible, retractable shade for the middle of the day.
Add a valance or pair it with a drop blind to handle low afternoon sun.

Straight-drop / outdoor blinds

These drop vertically down the western edge of the deck to stop that low, blinding afternoon sun — the part a folding arm awning alone can’t reach.

Retractable roof system

If you want to use the deck in rain as well as sun, a retractable roof gives you a solid, weatherproof cover you can open and close — the premium, use-it-all-year option.

Our usual recommendation

For most west-facing Sydney decks, the winning combination is a folding arm awning for overhead shade plus a straight-drop blind on the western side for the low sun. You get flexible cover through the day and protection from that brutal 4–6pm glare.

Don’t forget fabric and colour

Darker fabrics cut glare best; lighter ones reflect more heat — we’ll help you balance the two.
Choose a frame colour that matches your home’s trim so it looks built-in, not bolted-on.

Every deck is different — orientation, roof line, how exposed it is — so the right answer really comes down to seeing it in person. That’s what the free measure is for.
